Every NBA team that missed the NBA playoffs holds a chance at winning a top-four pick, but teams with worse records have a better chance at winning a top-four pick, effective as of the 2019 draft. After the lottery selects the teams that receive a top-four pick, the other teams receive an NBA draft pick based on their winning percentage from the prior season. As it is commonplace in the event of identical win-loss records, the NBA performs a random drawing to break ties for not just lottery teams, but also for playoff teams with equal records. This year, the Sacramento Kings won a tiebreaker for the draft lottery over the New Orleans Pelicans despite having a better overall record to conclude the regular season, bubble games included.
All non-playoff NBA teams enter the draft lottery to determine the first fourteen picks in the draft. The teams with the worst records are given more chances and have better odds of winning the lottery and selecting No. 1 overall. The draft was originally scheduled to be held at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on June 25, but was instead conducted at ESPN's facilities in Bristol, Connecticut, with the event held via videoconferencing. National Basketball Association teams took turns selecting amateur United States college basketball players and other eligible players, including international players.

At the start of this year's draft combine, only 60 prospects were confirmed to participate in this event. J. Hampton was also invited as an automatically eligible draft prospect for this year, both representing Australia's NBL as outsider Rising Stars for different teams. Like with prior years, players still held the option to either sit out the combine or have only limited participation there, such as with LaMelo Ball doing interviews with teams only. In the second half of the combine, teams were allowed to meet with any candidate that had mutual interest in them back, though each team had a set limit of meetings with players in mind before the draft began.
These meetings with players allowed teams to properly gauge each player to the best of their abilities during this time. After a weak international class in 2019, Maledon could be the top international player in 2020 and has a chance to push into the top few picks. With the 11th pick, the San Antonio Spurs took Devin Vassell from Florida State. The combo guard/forward becomes the second Florida State player taken in this year's draft lottery. Vassell enjoyed a breakout season, proving to be a strong team defender who can knock down open shots.
He's a lengthy wing at 6-foot-7 and his size will easily transition into a successful NBA wing defender. He can guard multiple positions and hit most of his open shots. The guard is coachable and has improved drastically from a lower-rated high school prospect. Unlike in recent years, there is no consensus No. 1 pick heading into the 2020 NBA draft. Georgia's Anthony Edwards is an explosive guard and thrived during his lone season in college while Memphis product James Wiseman could be a potential top option despite playing just three collegiate games.
Dayton's Obi Toppin is another top prospect after an award-winning redshirt sophomore season and LaMelo Ball, who spent last season playing overseas, is one of the most frequently discussed players in the class. Other international prospects like France's Killian Hayes and Israel's Deni Avdija could hear their names called early in the draft. The Phoenix Suns took Jalen Smith, a forward from the University of Maryland, with the 10th pick.
Smith is an athletic freak at the center position with the ability to run in today's NBA. The near 7-footer is an intriguing prospect and by far, the best shot-blocker in this draft class. Smith owns a great shooting touch, especially for a big, and displays the ability to be a pick-and-pop player. He now stands at 225 pounds but will need to continue to add strength to his game.
Toppin won the John R. Wooden Award last year, given to the top college basketball player in the country. Toppin hails from Brooklyn, N.Y. One of the better stories on draft night, the explosive athlete was not highly recruited in high school. In fact, Toppin grew several inches during his senior year of high school. Add in a New York City kid coming home to play for the Knicks. For the first part, players began their league and team interviews via videoconference feeds, similar to this year's draft lottery.
Then, in the second part, players began their individual, on-court programs at the NBA team facility nearest the player's home or interim residence instead of at one standardized area. While players were allowed to continue working out on their own even back in September 2020, this section lasted from October 16 until November 16. This program included strength and agility tests, anthropometric measurements, shooting drills, medical testing and examinations, and a "Pro Day" video filmed via HomeCourt, a mobile basketball training application. The NBA also gave a limit of 10 meetings total with the candidates there, with any extra meetings with someone cutting into their amount allowed for this year. Selected forwardPatrick Williamsfrom Florida State University with the fourth pick. Williams is the youngest college player in this draft and the first somewhat surprising selection of the night.
While at Florida State, Williams recorded zero starts for a disciplined Leonard Hamilton program. His size and raw skills leave a big upside for the 6-foot-8 forward, who recorded average numbers last season. The Bulls continue to build around a young and talented core including Coby White, Lauri Markkanen, and Zach LaVine. With this selection, the Ball family made NBA history on Wednesday.
Lonzo and LaMelo became the first set of brothers to both be selected as top-five picks in league history. For LaMelo, the 6-foot-7 guard possesses a ton of ball-skills, yet needs work on his jump shot. Ball needs some seasoning, which is part of a long rebuild for the Hornets. Therefore, the seeding for the bottom eight teams is set, and they're simply waiting for the draft lottery—which is scheduled for Tuesday, August 25—to arrive. While Wiseman only played three games in college before an eligibility battle, the 7-footer was highly regarded in this draft. A lengthy former five-star recruit, Wiseman possesses a huge wingspan and exceptional athleticism. The big-man is incredibly mobile, which is a necessity for centers in today's NBA. It will be exciting to see Wiseman in the pick-and-roll with Stephen Curry.

You can question his picks, or not, but you can't question his willingness to meet the draft day trade market to get the players he wants. His shooting ability is an excellent addition to the playmaking abilities ofKemba WalkerandJayson Tatum. The 6-foot-9 stretch forward played for Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli Basketball Premier League. He displays a unique shooting and playmaking ability for a player of his size.
He averaged 12.3 points per game last year overseas and became the highest-ever drafted Israeli prospect. This is a noteworthy pick because of the Wizards' defensive struggles. The Wizards ranked dead-last in defensive ratings this year while Avdija is touted for his scoring ability. Took Onyeka Okongwu from the University of Southern California with the sixth-overall pick.
Okongwu is considered one of the better bigs in this draft class. In 28 games with USC, he shot 61.6 percent from the field, proving his ability to take high-percentage shots at the rim. Atlanta is another team loaded with young talent, includingTrae Young,Cam Reddish, andDeAndre Hunter.
Of course, Okongwu will benefit from playing beside six-year NBA veteran Clint Capela. Holding the league's worst record at 15-50, the Warriors were guaranteed to make a selection in the top five picks of the draft for the first time since 2002. After months of waiting, the Warriors will finally know when Bob Myers and Steve Kerr will be on the clock for the 2020 edition of the NBA Draft.
The Celtics have three first-round picks, so there's a good chance they look to package one or more of those selections in a trade. If they're attempting to move up in the lottery, the No. 14 pick certainly has more trade value on draft night than No. 17. Well actually from the team's perspective it is good to have that many, but from the perspective of the players they pick you can. They had a ton of first round picks and most of them are basically in limbo because there are only so many spots.

He's measured at just shy of 7-foot-1 in shoes with a 7-6 wingspan, and his athleticism, when paired with that length, allows him to protect the rim on one end and get out and run with the best bigs on the other. Wiseman has a jumper that he can go to, and it's likely that teams will covet his shot-blocking.
But big men aren't as coveted in today's NBA as a potential primary ball-handler and scorer, and while Wiseman has plenty of potential, he's still missing a go-to scoring game. Anthony is one of three or so players who could have a case to go No. 1 in 2020. The popular scouting term right now is "gravity," and basically refers to a player's ability to pull the defense out to him, creating openings and awkward rotations. And while Curry is an extreme example, we've seen NBA teams truly start to value off-the-dribble shooters like Trae Young and Darius Garland in recent years. Anthony is a three-level scorer with high-level athleticism and a 43-inch vertical, which is why he was ranked as the top combo guard and No. 4 overall player in the 247Sports Composite. He could be even more equipped to blow up scoreboards in Chapel Hill than Coby White was, and White wound up being the No. 7 pick.
